Born in Melbourne, Campbell began ballet classes in the Cecchetti method with Graeme and Marilyn Dowd at Ballet Centre Dandenong. He studied for RAD examinations at the National Theatre with Gaylene Stock, Gary Norman and Leigh Rowels before being accepted into the Australian Ballet School. After graduating with Honours in 1989, Campbell was offered a contract with the Australian Ballet by Director Maina Gielgud.
Campbell achieved the rank of Senior Artist at the Australian Ballet when the desire and opportunity to travel saw him become a principal dancer with the Scottish ballet. While still in the UK he danced principal roles with the Royal Ballet and had a successful period in London’s West End production of CATS.
In 2000 he returned as Principal to the Australian ballet under director David McAllister. Since retiring from the stage Campbell has worked in many of the elite schools and companies teaching classical ballet.
Campbell works with our pre-professional students in conditioning, repertoire and solo performance. His variation of Paquita was performed in New York at the 2018 Youth America Grand Prix by MSCD student Rémy D. who was awarded 3rd Place and a full-time scholarship to John Cranko Schule in Stuttgart Germany.
